اصبح نهر بولاية كولورادو لونه برتقالى بسبب تسرب المياه العادمة من الألغام في سلفرتون، كولورادو هذا الماء الملوث بسبب المعادن الثقيلة مثل الرصاص والزرنيخ، والتي تضفي على الماء هذا اللون الغريب لأنه حدث ذلك مؤخرا، لا يزال المسؤولون في معرفة أفضل السبل لتنظيف المياة وإعادة تأهيل النظام البيئي التالف لقد نصح الناس عدم استعمال الماء حتى يتم تنظيفه تماما ومن الواضح، انه كان يجري تخزين مياه الصرف الصحي داخل المنجم المهجورة، وتم فتحه دون قصد في النهر من قبل طاقم من وكالة حماية البيئة .
